Documenting this is a picture of an old German lighthouse-keeper near the mouth of the Mississippi River playing an accordion (Keeler and Waud 1871: 524-26). This is what appropriate, since accordions were probably exported from Germany to French Louisiana via the lower Mississippi River. There is other evidence of accordions very early in South Louisiana.

Tisserand (1998: 44-45) illustrates a copy of a daguerreotype, dated circa 1850, that is American located in the Louisiana State Museum in New Orleans. It evolved into a style not found elsewhere in the world, and based on the style, probably first developed by black Creoles and joke, then taught to Cajuns.
