Beyond the Book Report: Ways to Respond to Literature Using New York Times Models. Teaching ideas based on New York Times content. Below, we present some alternatives to that classic classroom assignment, the youtube book report. Of Death! All of our ideas are inspired by The New York Times in youtube, some way, either because we#8217;ve adapted an interesting format, or because we were inspired by of death thesis an article, review, essay, interview or multimedia feature. Do you assign book reports, in any format, to your students? What do they look like? Join the conversation!

A Times-Style Book Review. Read The Times#8217;s Books section to scan several current book reviews of novels, story collections and poetry, and to use the youtube search feature to find reviews of older books. Next, make a list of merchant of death common elements. These might include a summary of the plot or main points or themes, comparisons or references to the writer#8217;s earlier works, discussion of the writer#8217;s contemporaries or influences, how the reviewer assesses the work#8217;s quality; connections (if any) the reviewer has to the subject matter; and the like. Next, write your own Times-style review of youtube a book, incorporating many of these elements. If The Times has also reviewed the book you#8217;ve chosen, avoid reading it until you have crafted your own review, of ap grading course. Dessay! Book Talk, With You as Host. Create a podcast around a book or author, perhaps inspired by the format of those found in the Times#8217; Book Review. You might act as host and introduce several different segments, such as a mock interview with the merchant author or an expert on the topic, or a discussion of how a classic book is suddenly timely.

You might also include free-form segments like #8220;The Book That Changed My Life,#8221; #8220;What We#8217;re Reading,#8221; or #8220;My First-Ever Favorite Book.#8221; You could vary these with #8220;advertisements#8221; for books, top-10 lists of favorite authors or characters, or news about book-related events, such as online book discussions or local events such as readings given by authors. For classic works, you might set the podcast in the time of its publication, considering other works popular at the time, the issues of the dessay day and thesis, so on. Or, include an #8220;interview#8221; with the author, drawing from research such as published interviews, profiles, memoirs and biographies to ground the portrayal in fact. Youtube! Another idea? Role-play a conversation of writers from the past or present sitting down together to talk about one another#8217;s work, or their own works in progress, with the podcast acting as the #8220;tape recorder#8221; that captures the whole thing. Judging the Book by writing an argument worksheet Its Cover. Start by youtube considering how a cover #8220;sells#8221; a book and serves as a quick visual reference, and make a quick list of favorite or most memorable covers. Then view this slide show of essays rejected cover designs and compare them with the covers that were ultimately chosen. Are the final ones better?

Why? Next, create paintings or other illustrations to honor a book you#8217;re reading. You might do this in homage to the covers of favorite books, or you might create a cover for a work that doesn#8217;t have its own cover, such as a piece you read in an anthology or story collection. The covers can be representative of the setting, a key scene, main characters or major plot event, or be more abstract or conceptual, capturing the tone of the work, a theme or character#8217;s mental state.Or, you might want to create covers in the style of a favorite artist. Choose key scenes from a novel that is set in youtube, a real place and find photos or illustrations online that show the locations described by the author. (You can choose photos that fit the essays novel#8217;s descriptions if the setting is not directly named or is not a real place.) Another option is to choose an author and show the places from a variety of his or her works, such as this feature about novelist Haruki Murakami, which includes a photo, related excerpt and voice recording of the person who chose them. Dessay! As a low-tech alternative, you might draw, and annotate with relevant passages, maps of novels#8217; environs or all the settings used in a writer#8217;s oeuvre. For a longer-term project, visit the real life #8220;stomping grounds#8221; of a fictional character or visit places with a rich literary history and create a blog or podcast about them. You might record yourself reading relevant passages or discussing the ap grading rubric works in dessay, the very spot the author(s) wrote about. Create (and record, and add liner notes explaining) a soundtrack for a book you#8217;re reading, or invent a rap about it, as these Stanford students did about the thesis biology of how the body converts food into energy.

Making Lists of youtube dessay Favorites. Check out the New York Times Best Seller List from weeks past and present, noting the categories found there. Use or tweak the rubric categories to take a poll of youtube classmates, teachers, parents, school and public librarians and thesis, other readers to learn what books they are currently reading or have recently read. Then, work with others to make your own lists #8212; whether of youtube dessay local favorites; of books read in school over the years; or, perhaps, of writing an argument essay worksheet genre suggestions along the lines of #8220;If you liked the #8216;Harry Potter#8217; books, you#8217;ll love#8230;#8221;. You and your classmates might then each choose one book to write up in the style of an Inside the List blurb that tells about the book, its author, its audience or all of these. Or, create #8220;shelf talkers#8221; about dessay, some of these books for power essay your school library modeled after those in this bookstore. Annotate Lists on One Topic.

Choose an author, genre, time period, historical event, place or other relatively general topic and research books by or about the subject, perhaps starting with the Times#8217; Sunday Book Review or Book News and Reviews. Create annotated lists of published works about it, like this one on the Civil War, organized by dessay category, chronology or other technique. You might then create brochure or Web pages, or a library display, as part of ap grading rubric essays a class collection called #8220;So You Want to Know About#8230;#8221; Brainstorm thought-provoking questions about a common text, such as what might have happened five years before the events in a novel begin, 25 years after they end, or what would happen if a key plot point was changed. Then, ask several people to youtube dessay weigh in and give short answers in essay, order to create a Room for Debate- style response. Book Report by Video. Work with others in small groups to create short videos about dessay, a book or author you have read. You might voice-over narration and and include interviews, as in money equals, this example which is about the #8220;Babar#8221; series of children#8217;s books. Be creative about your interviewees.

For instance, you might talk to fans of youtube dessay a book series waiting until midnight for example the release of the next installment; people of the same generation about what a seminal book meant to them as children; or experts like teachers, professors and historians who can weigh in on the significance of a often-taught book, or on a book controversy. Another approach to the video is to youtube stage key scenes from novels or stories, or record dramatic readings, with sound effects. Or, make an essay author and his or her works the subject of a video, with an actor portraying him or her and reenacting important career and life events. Youtube Dessay! The Graphic Novel Version. Everything from the Bible to #8220;Twilight#8221; to #8220;The Art of War#8221; is being turned into a graphic novel. Of Death Thesis! How would the book you#8217;re currently reading be transformed by youtube this genre? You might adapt our simple storyboarding graphic organizer (PDF) to get started with a scene or two. Equals! Book Blurbs on Blogs. Read the #8220;books#8221; category of the ArtsBeat blog for youtube a week or more, researching the topics mentioned there.

Then, work on short blog posts of your own that go into greater detail, or give the #8220;back story,#8221; about each news item for your audience. For example, a recent post about othello on love, new and ongoing manga series might inspire a segment on dessay, manga in general. Why Your Favorite Author Matters. Write persuasive essays that combine research, critical analysis of of death thesis major works and personal accounts that raise and answer the question #8220;Why does this author matter?#8221; You might begin by reading Sunday Book Review essays with similar aims, such as this one about Lionel Trilling, this #8220;Riff#8221; column about Joan Didion, or by youtube dessay reading the example back issues of the review. You can also search Times Topics pages which collect all the news, reference and archival information, photos, graphics, audio and video files published on topic, and find nearly any published author #8212; whether Stephen King or Shakespeare #8212;. Use them as a starting point for dessay research. Alternatively, the essay can be about why a particular work, genre or literary era matters, using the equals power essay same guidelines. The Book Report of the youtube dessay Future. Has the format of the merchant of death thesis book report assignment in your school morphed over time?

If so, how? What do you imagine a #8220;book report#8221; in 2025 might look like? Use our post on the the #8220;future of youtube reading#8221; that examines how technology is changing reading, readers and money equals power essay, books to youtube propose new formats for presenting reader responses to literature. For instance, perhaps you and your classmates can join or create an online book sharing and reviewing community, design a book app, or write about the equals power difference between reading a paper-and-ink book and an e-book or some other digital format. I#8217;ve always loved alternatives to the standard book report and you#8217;ve just given me some wonderful new ones to add to my arsenal. Assignments like these are more meaningful to the student, deter cheating (aka copying/pasting), promote creative thinking, and are much more interesting for the teacher (or any audience) to read and/or engage in. Thank you for an argument sharing! This is really #8220;beyond the book report#8221;, I got assigned to youtube dessay a book report but in our class we can choose what we want to read, so I#8217;m currently reading a book I#8217;m enjoying so much that I couldn#8217;t put it down at night. But the and afforestation bad thing is youtube we have assigned tasks to rubric complete, and they#8217;re boring; if every teacher used this in America I#8217;m sure reading will turn into youtube dessay, a enjoyable thing for reluctant readers or bookworms like me. My 5th grade Reading/Language Arts classes now have a fun way to share a book they loved. With the help of our IT teacher, they can make an Animoto video that is then linked to our school#8217;s website, which can be viewed by all students. Of Death Thesis! Also, we learned to make QR codes from the same video, which our librarian tapes inside the book. Other students can use iPhones or iPods to scan the youtube code and watch the money essay promo video. This is a great way to integrate technology skills with language arts skills! Since my students love to do this, and they can#8217;t make a video that has been already made twice, they are encouraged to branch out in their reading genre.

I#8217;ve enjoyed working on these Animoto book trailers with Donna B. Check them out: http://tinyurl.com/wilsonbooktrailers. Sign up for our free newsletter. Youtube! Get the latest lesson plans, contests and rubric essays, resources for teaching with The Times.

It’s All an Allusion: Identifying Allusions, in Literature and in Life. Overview | What is an allusion? How often do you spot them, whether in your reading, in pop culture, in advertising or anywhere else? In this lesson, students read a Book Review essay about allusions in literature, take a quiz in which they identify allusions made in New York Times articles and youtube, headlines, then choose from a variety of activities to go deeper. Materials | Computers with Internet access and printing capability. Warm-Up | Ask students to define “allusion.” Check that they understand it as a “brief, usually indirect reference to another place, event” or to words spoken by or that depict a person or fictional character. Essays On Love. Give a few common examples, like someone being described as a “Romeo,” an dessay, allusion to Shakespeare’s romantic but doomed tragic hero, or a person saying, “I never thought I’d move back to my hometown, but I guess deep down, I’m a Dorothy,” alluding to the “Wizard of Oz” character who learns “there’s no place like home.” You can also ask what is meant by calling a group of women “the real housewives of (name of your city or town)” and asking the source (wealthy, drama-prone women who have a similar look to those seen on write essay example, the “Real Housewives” franchise). Youtube. Ask, what would you expect if I called a certain boy an Edward? What about a Jacob? (main characters of the “Twilight” book and movie series). Have students name more allusions, explaining their meanings and sources. Then, lead a discussion about the pros and cons of making allusions.

Pros might include conveying much information in a single word or two or bonding over a shared interest in the source. Cons include allusions only making sense to those who know the source material or, in essay on deforestation, the case of pop culture phenomena, losing their meaning as time passes. Youtube Dessay. To prove this, ask students to describe a “Jeannie Bueller,” or an “Eddie Haskell.” Then ask colleagues in their 40’s or 50’s the same question to share the answers: a jealous sister who has a wildly popular brother (from “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”), and money, a sycophant who is overly polite to adults for his own gain (“Leave It to Beaver”). End by turning the tables on yourself and youtube, your colleagues, having students ask you to explain allusions to things that most in money power, their peer group will understand immediately but might not be so clear to those being asked. Or, have them brainstorm allusions today that most would understand (“Brangelina,” for youtube dessay example), but that may be impenetrable twenty-five years from of death now. Related | In the dessay, essay “Grand Allusion,” Elizabeth D. Samet writes about the pleasures and perils of this literary device:

Allusion can feel like something of a parlor game even in equals, the best of times. Youtube. In the 1940s, in a discussion of T. S. Eliot’s densely allusive poem “The Waste Land,” the formalist critics William K. Wimsatt and Monroe C. Money Equals Essay. Beardsley questioned prevailing assumptions about the value of allusion-hunting. Eschewing the role of literary detective, they rejected the notion that we “do not know what a poet means unless we have traced him in dessay, his reading.” “Eliot’s allusions work,” they argued in “The Intentional Fallacy,” “when we know them — and to a great extent even when we do not know them, through their suggestive power. . . . It would not much matter if Eliot invented his sources,” as Walter Scott and Coleridge had done. Wimsatt and Beardsley’s warning that identifying an allusion does not amount to the same thing as understanding its significance has renewed urgency in the current age of essay on deforestation allusion-automation, for if the Web makes it that much easier for the allusion-hunter to bag his quarry, it does not necessarily tell him how to youtube, dress it. Read the entire article with your class, using the money essay, questions below.

Questions | For discussion and reading comprehension: Why do allusions that fail to convey their intended meaning or are not understood by the audience “leave us all exposed,” as Ms. Samet contends? How is the youtube, “Vronsky’s horse” anecdote an ap grading rubric, example of this? Why does the classroom have “its own special dangers” when it comes to youtube, allusions? How, according to the essay, has the Internet affected people’s abilities to use and verify allusions?

How does your experiences with allusions support or challenge the author’s statement that “In trying to essay, illuminate an allusion in class, I sometimes feel as if I’m opening one nesting doll after another until there’s nothing left at youtube dessay all.” Activity | Begin by having students reread the thesis, article, finding the unexplained allusions it contains. Have them identify the sources, marking “K” for those they already knew and therefore recognized immediately, “I” for youtube those they found via Internet searching, and “O” for other, meaning that they found the source in some other way, whether asking other people, looking in books, or even just guessing. The allusions include: “I was reminded that each unhappy allusion is unhappy in essay on deforestation, its own way.” –Leo Tolstoy, “Anna Karenina” “Don’t make it sad, Cricket, I don’t feel that way.” — Ernest Hemingway, “To Have and Have Not” and the 1944 film adaptation.

“Scylla of the swindle to the Charybdis of condescension” — Greek mythology: Scylla is a sea creature who devours sailors and Charybdis is a whirlpool opposite Scylla’s cave. “… several keyboarding Natty Bumppos of youtube my acquaintance” — James Fenimore Cooper’s The Leatherstocking Tales. The title of the ap grading rubric, essay “Grand Allusion” — a play on “Grand Illusion,” a 1937 French war film directed by Jean Renoir. Lead a discussion about the experience of identifying the above allusions. Compare the pride of knowing, or at least being being familiar with, one or more, versus the experience of searching for the phrase online. Ask: What is the difference between relying on dessay, Google versus your own memory of othello on love favorite books, movies or plays? Is this distinction relevant today for most people, do you think? Next, ask students to discuss this idea from today’s essay: Wimsatt and dessay, Beardsley’s warning that identifying an allusion does not amount to merchant of death thesis, the same thing as understanding its significance has renewed urgency in the current age of allusion-automation, for dessay if the Web makes it that much easier for the allusion-hunter to bag his quarry, it does not necessarily tell him how to money essay, dress it. Ask for examples that illustrate the point. You might begin by dessay, asking students if they share a love of a certain sports team or musician with a parent or other older person, and the difference, if there is rubric, any, between, say, watching live as a famous game unfolded (or listening just as a seminal album was released) versus watching highlights online or downloading an youtube dessay, entire music catalog in example, a single sitting.

Then use the Scylla and Charybdis allusion from the essay as an example. Ask: Is it enough to youtube dessay, know it’s a reference to a Greek myth? Or to truly “get” the allusion, do you have to know the story it comes from and what it means? Next, have students take the essay on deforestation and afforestation, New York Times Literary Allusions Quiz, below, alone, in partners or in small groups. New York Times Literary Allusions Quiz. essay on tay john How public education cripples our kids, and why. I taught for youtube dessay, thirty years in some of the worst schools in Manhattan, and in some of the best, and during that time I became an expert in boredom. Boredom was everywhere in my world, and if you asked the kids, as I often did, why they felt so bored, they always gave the same answers: They said the write example, work was stupid, that it made no sense, that they already knew it. They said they wanted to be doing something real, not just sitting around. Dessay? They said teachers didn't seem to know much about money power their subjects and clearly weren't interested in learning more.

And the kids were right: their teachers were every bit as bored as they were. Boredom is the common condition of schoolteachers, and anyone who has spent time in a teachers' lounge can vouch for the low energy, the whining, the dispirited attitudes, to be found there. When asked why they feel bored, the teachers tend to blame the kids, as you might expect. Who wouldn't get bored teaching students who are rude and interested only in grades? If even that. Of course, teachers are themselves products of the same twelve-year compulsory school programs that so thoroughly bore their students, and as school personnel they are trapped inside structures even more rigid than those imposed upon the children. Who, then, is to blame? We all are. My grandfather taught me that. One afternoon when I was seven I complained to youtube, him of boredom, and he batted me hard on the head.

He told me that I was never to use that term in his presence again, that if I was bored it was my fault and no one else's. The obligation to amuse and instruct myself was entirely my own, and people who didn't know that were childish people, to be avoided if possible. Certainly not to be trusted. That episode cured me of boredom forever, and here and there over the years I was able to writing, pass on the lesson to some remarkable student. For the youtube dessay, most part, however, I found it futile to essay, challenge the official notion that boredom and childishness were the natural state of affairs in the classroom. Often I had to defy custom, and even bend the law, to help kids break out of this trap.

The empire struck back, of course; childish adults regularly conflate opposition with disloyalty. I once returned from a medical leave to discover that all evidence of my having been granted the leave had been purposely destroyed, that my job had been terminated, and that I no longer possessed even a teaching license. After nine months of youtube dessay, tormented effort I was able to retrieve the license when a school secretary testified to witnessing the plot unfold. In the meantime my family suffered more than I care to remember. By the time I finally retired in 1991, I had more than enough reason to think of our schools - with their long-term, cell-block-style, forced confinement of both students and teachers - as virtual factories of childishness. Yet I honestly could not see why they had to othello essays on love, be that way. Youtube? My own experience had revealed to writing an argument, me what many other teachers must learn along the way, too, yet keep to youtube dessay, themselves for fear of reprisal: if we wanted to we could easily and inexpensively jettison the old, stupid structures and help kids take an othello essays education rather than merely receive a schooling. We could encourage the best qualities of youthfulness - curiosity, adventure, resilience, the capacity for surprising insight - simply by being more flexible about dessay time, texts, and tests, by rubric, introducing kids to truly competent adults, and by giving each student what autonomy he or she needs in order to take a risk every now and then.

But we don't do that. And the dessay, more I asked why not, and persisted in thinking about the problem of schooling as an engineer might, the ap grading rubric essays, more I missed the point: What if there is no problem with our schools? What if they are the way they are, so expensively flying in the face of common sense and long experience in how children learn things, not because they are doing something wrong but because they are doing something right? Is it possible that George W. Youtube Dessay? Bush accidentally spoke the truth when he said we would leave no child behind? Could it be that our schools are designed to make sure not one of othello, them ever really grows up? D o we really need school?

I don't mean education, just forced schooling: six classes a day, five days a week, nine months a year, for twelve years. Is this deadly routine really necessary? And if so, for what? Don't hide behind reading, writing, and arithmetic as a rationale, because 2 million happy homeschoolers have surely put that banal justification to rest. Even if they hadn't, a considerable number of well-known Americans never went through the dessay, twelve-year wringer our kids currently go through, and merchant they turned out all right. Youtube? George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln? Someone taught them, to be sure, but they were not products of a school system, and not one of them was ever graduated from merchant of death, a secondary school. Throughout most of American history, kids generally didn't go to high school, yet the unschooled rose to be admirals, like Farragut; inventors, like Edison; captains of industry, like Carnegie and Rockefeller; writers, like Melville and Twain and Conrad; and even scholars, like Margaret Mead. In fact, until pretty recently people who reached the age of thirteen weren't looked upon as children at all. Ariel Durant, who co-wrote an enormous, and very good, multivolume history of the world with her husband, Will, was happily married at fifteen, and who could reasonably claim that Ariel Durant was an uneducated person?

Unschooled, perhaps, but not uneducated. We have been taught (that is, schooled) in this country to think of success as synonymous with, or at least dependent upon, schooling, but historically that isn't true in either an intellectual or a financial sense. And plenty of people throughout the world today find a way to educate themselves without resorting to a system of compulsory secondary schools that all too often resemble prisons. Why, then, do Americans confuse education with just such a system? What exactly is the purpose of our public schools? Mass schooling of dessay, a compulsory nature really got its teeth into the United States between 1905 and 1915, though it was conceived of much earlier and of death pushed for dessay, throughout most of the nineteenth century.

The reason given for this enormous upheaval of essays on love, family life and cultural traditions was, roughly speaking, threefold: 1) To make good people. 2) To make good citizens. 3) To make each person his or her personal best. These goals are still trotted out dessay, today on a regular basis, and most of us accept them in one form or another as a decent definition of public education's mission, however short schools actually fall in achieving them.

But we are dead wrong. Compounding our error is the fact that the national literature holds numerous and ap grading rubric surprisingly consistent statements of compulsory schooling's true purpose. We have, for dessay, example, the great H. L. Money Power? Mencken, who wrote in The American Mercury for April 1924 that the aim of public education is dessay, not. to fill the young of the species with knowledge and awaken their intelligence. . . . Nothing could be further from the truth. The aim.. . is worksheet, simply to reduce as many individuals as possible to the same safe level, to breed and train a standardized citizenry, to put down dissent and youtube originality.

That is its aim in essays on love, the United States . . . and that is its aim everywhere else. Because of Mencken's reputation as a satirist, we might be tempted to dessay, dismiss this passage as a bit of hyperbolic sarcasm. His article, however, goes on to trace the template for our own educational system back to the now vanished, though never to writing an argument essay, be forgotten, military state of youtube, Prussia. And although he was certainly aware of the irony that we had recently been at war with Germany, the heir to Prussian thought and culture, Mencken was being perfectly serious here. Our educational system really is Prussian in origin, and that really is cause for concern. The odd fact of a Prussian provenance for our schools pops up again and write essay again once you know to look for it. William James alluded to it many times at the turn of the century. Dessay? Orestes Brownson, the essay, hero of Christopher Lasch's 1991 book, The True and Only Heaven , was publicly denouncing the Prussianization of American schools back in the 1840s.

Horace Mann's Seventh Annual Report to youtube dessay, the Massachusetts State Board of equals essay, Education in 1843 is essentially a paean to the land of Frederick the youtube, Great and a call for writing, its schooling to be brought here. That Prussian culture loomed large in America is hardly surprising, given our early association with that utopian state. A Prussian served as Washington's aide during the Revolutionary War, and so many German- speaking people had settled here by 1795 that Congress considered publishing a German-language edition of the dessay, federal laws. But what shocks is that we should so eagerly have adopted one of the rubric, very worst aspects of Prussian culture: an educational system deliberately designed to produce mediocre intellects, to youtube, hamstring the inner life, to deny students appreciable leadership skills, and to ensure docile and incomplete citizens - all in order to render the populace manageable. I t was from James Bryant Conant - president of Harvard for ap grading, twenty years, WWI poison-gas specialist, WWII executive on the atomic-bomb project, high commissioner of the American zone in youtube, Germany after WWII, and truly one of the most influential figures of the twentieth century - that I first got wind of the real purposes of ap grading, American schooling. Without Conant, we would probably not have the same style and degree of standardized testing that we enjoy today, nor would we be blessed with gargantuan high schools that warehouse 2,000 to 4,000 students at dessay, a time, like the famous Columbine High in Littleton, Colorado.

Shortly after I retired from teaching I picked up Conant's 1959 book-length essay, The Child the thesis, Parent and the State , and was more than a little intrigued to youtube dessay, see him mention in passing that the modern schools we attend were the money, result of a revolution engineered between 1905 and 1930. A revolution? He declines to elaborate, but he does direct the dessay, curious and the uninformed to Alexander Inglis's 1918 book, Principles of Secondary Education , in which one saw this revolution through the eyes of a revolutionary. Inglis, for whom a lecture in education at Harvard is named, makes it perfectly clear that compulsory schooling on this continent was intended to be just what it had been for Prussia in ap grading rubric, the 1820s: a fifth column into youtube dessay, the burgeoning democratic movement that threatened to give the peasants and the proletarians a voice at othello on love, the bargaining table. Modern, industrialized, compulsory schooling was to make a sort of surgical incision into the prospective unity of these underclasses. Divide children by dessay, subject, by age-grading, by money power, constant rankings on tests, and by youtube dessay, many other more subtle means, and it was unlikely that the ignorant mass of mankind, separated in childhood, would ever reintegrate into a dangerous whole. Inglis breaks down the equals, purpose - the actual purpose - of dessay, modem schooling into essay on deforestation, six basic functions, any one of which is enough to curl the youtube dessay, hair of those innocent enough to believe the three traditional goals listed earlier: 1) The adjustive or adaptive function. Money Power? Schools are to youtube, establish fixed habits of reaction to authority.

This, of course, precludes critical judgment completely. It also pretty much destroys the idea that useful or interesting material should be taught, because you can't test for reflexive obedience until you know whether you can make kids learn, and do, foolish and boring things. 2) The integrating function. This might well be called the conformity function, because its intention is to make children as alike as possible. People who conform are predictable, and this is of great use to those who wish to harness and writing worksheet manipulate a large labor force. 3) The diagnostic and directive function. School is meant to determine each student's proper social role. Dessay? This is done by logging evidence mathematically and anecdotally on cumulative records.

As in your permanent record. Yes, you do have one. 4) The differentiating function. Merchant Of Death Thesis? Once their social role has been diagnosed, children are to be sorted by youtube dessay, role and example trained only so far as their destination in the social machine merits - and not one step further. Youtube? So much for making kids their personal best. 5) The selective function.

This refers not to human choice at all but to equals power, Darwin's theory of dessay, natural selection as applied to what he called the essay worksheet, favored races. In short, the idea is to help things along by consciously attempting to improve the youtube, breeding stock. Schools are meant to othello essays, tag the unfit - with poor grades, remedial placement, and other punishments - clearly enough that their peers will accept them as inferior and effectively bar them from the reproductive sweepstakes. That's what all those little humiliations from first grade onward were intended to do: wash the dirt down the drain. 6) The propaedeutic function.

The societal system implied by these rules will require an elite group of caretakers. To that end, a small fraction of the kids will quietly be taught how to manage this continuing project, how to watch over dessay, and control a population deliberately dumbed down and declawed in order that government might proceed unchallenged and corporations might never want for obedient labor. That, unfortunately, is the thesis, purpose of youtube dessay, mandatory public education in this country. And lest you take Inglis for essays, an isolated crank with a rather too cynical take on the educational enterprise, you should know that he was hardly alone in championing these ideas. Conant himself, building on the ideas of Horace Mann and others, campaigned tirelessly for an American school system designed along the same lines. Men like George Peabody, who funded the cause of mandatory schooling throughout the South, surely understood that the Prussian system was useful in creating not only a harmless electorate and dessay a servile labor force but also a virtual herd of othello essays on love, mindless consumers. In time a great number of industrial titans came to recognize the enormous profits to be had by youtube dessay, cultivating and tending just such a herd via public education, among them Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller. T here you have it. Now you know. We don't need Karl Marx's conception of a grand warfare between the classes to see that it is in on love, the interest of youtube, complex management, economic or political, to dumb people down, to an argument essay worksheet, demoralize them, to divide them from one another, and to discard them if they don't conform. Youtube? Class may frame the proposition, as when Woodrow Wilson, then president of Princeton University, said the following to the New York City School Teachers Association in 1909: We want one class of persons to have a liberal education, and we want another class of persons, a very much larger class, of necessity, in every society, to forgo the privileges of a liberal education and fit themselves to perform specific difficult manual tasks.

But the ap grading rubric, motives behind the disgusting decisions that bring about these ends need not be class-based at all. Youtube Dessay? They can stem purely from fear, or from the by money equals essay, now familiar belief that efficiency is the paramount virtue, rather than love, liberty, laughter, or hope. Youtube Dessay? Above all, they can stem from simple greed. There were vast fortunes to be made, after all, in an economy based on mass production and organized to favor the large corporation rather than the small business or the family farm. But mass production required mass consumption, and at the turn of the twentieth century most Americans considered it both unnatural and unwise to buy things they didn't actually need. Mandatory schooling was a godsend on that count. School didn't have to train kids in any direct sense to think they should consume nonstop, because it did something even better: it encouraged them not to think at all.

And that left them sitting ducks for another great invention of the modem era - marketing. Now, you needn't have studied marketing to ap grading, know that there are two groups of people who can always be convinced to youtube dessay, consume more than they need to: addicts and children. School has done a pretty good job of turning our children into addicts, but it has done a spectacular job of equals power, turning our children into children. Youtube? Again, this is no accident. Theorists from Plato to Rousseau to power essay, our own Dr. Inglis knew that if children could be cloistered with other children, stripped of responsibility and independence, encouraged to develop only the trivializing emotions of greed, envy, jealousy, and fear, they would grow older but never truly grow up.

In the 1934 edition of his once well-known book Public Education in the United States , Ellwood P. Cubberley detailed and praised the way the dessay, strategy of successive school enlargements had extended childhood by two to on deforestation and afforestation, six years, and youtube dessay forced schooling was at that point still quite new. This same Cubberley - who was dean of Stanford's School of essay on deforestation and afforestation, Education, a textbook editor at Houghton Mifflin, and Conant's friend and dessay correspondent at rubric essays, Harvard - had written the following in dessay, the 1922 edition of his book Public School Administration : Our schools are . Write Essay Example? . . Youtube? factories in which the raw products (children) are to be shaped and fashioned.. . . Thesis? And it is the business of the youtube, school to on love, build its pupils according to the specifications laid down. It's perfectly obvious from our society today what those specifications were. Maturity has by now been banished from nearly every aspect of our lives. Easy divorce laws have removed the need to work at relationships; easy credit has removed the need for fiscal self-control; easy entertainment has removed the need to learn to entertain oneself; easy answers have removed the need to ask questions. We have become a nation of children, happy to surrender our judgments and our wills to political exhortations and commercial blandishments that would insult actual adults. We buy televisions, and then we buy the dessay, things we see on the television.

We buy computers, and then we buy the things we see on the computer. We buy $150 sneakers whether we need them or not, and when they fall apart too soon we buy another pair. We drive SUVs and believe the lie that they constitute a kind of ap grading, life insurance, even when we're upside-down in them. And, worst of youtube, all, we don't bat an eye when Ari Fleischer tells us to of death thesis, be careful what you say, even if we remember having been told somewhere back in school that America is the land of the free. We simply buy that one too.

Our schooling, as intended, has seen to dessay, it. N ow for the good news. Once you understand the logic behind modern schooling, its tricks and traps are fairly easy to avoid. School trains children to be employees and consumers; teach your own to be leaders and adventurers. School trains children to obey reflexively; teach your own to think critically and independently. Well-schooled kids have a low threshold for boredom; help your own to develop an inner life so that they'll never be bored. Urge them to take on the serious material, the essay, grown-up material, in history, literature, philosophy, music, art, economics, theology - all the stuff schoolteachers know well enough to avoid. Challenge your kids with plenty of solitude so that they can learn to youtube, enjoy their own company, to conduct inner dialogues.

Well-schooled people are conditioned to dread being alone, and they seek constant companionship through the merchant of death, TV, the computer, the cell phone, and through shallow friendships quickly acquired and quickly abandoned. Your children should have a more meaningful life, and they can. First, though, we must wake up to what our schools really are: laboratories of experimentation on dessay, young minds, drill centers for the habits and attitudes that corporate society demands. On Deforestation And Afforestation? Mandatory education serves children only dessay, incidentally; its real purpose is to turn them into servants. Don't let your own have their childhoods extended, not even for a day. If David Farragut could take command of a captured British warship as a preteen, if Thomas Edison could publish a broadsheet at the age of twelve, if Ben Franklin could apprentice himself to a printer at the same age (then put himself through a course of study that would choke a Yale senior today), there's no telling what your own kids could do. After a long life, and thirty years in the public school trenches, I've concluded that genius is writing worksheet, as common as dirt. We suppress our genius only youtube, because we haven't yet figured out how to manage a population of educated men and women. The solution, I think, is othello, simple and glorious. Let them manage themselves.

Guide to the Classics: Michel de Montaigne’s Essay. Montaigne: his free-ranging essays were almost scandalous in their day. Etienne Dumonstier/Wikimedia Commons. When Michel de Montaigne retired to his family estate in dessay, 1572, aged 38, he tells us that he wanted to merchant of death, write his famous Essays as a distraction for his idle mind. Dessay? He neither wanted nor expected people beyond his circle of friends to be too interested. His Essays’ preface almost warns us off:

Reader, you have here an honest book; … in writing it, I have proposed to myself no other than a domestic and private end. I have had no consideration at all either to your service or to my glory … Thus, reader, I myself am the an argument essay, matter of my book: there’s no reason that you should employ your leisure upon so frivolous and youtube vain a subject. Therefore farewell. The ensuing, free-ranging essays, although steeped in classical poetry, history and philosophy, are unquestionably something new in the history of Western thought. They were almost scandalous for their day. No one before Montaigne in the Western canon had thought to devote pages to subjects as diverse and seemingly insignificant as “Of Smells”, “Of the Custom of Wearing Clothes”, “Of Posting” (letters, that is), “Of Thumbs” or “Of Sleep” — let alone reflections on the unruliness of the male appendage, a subject which repeatedly concerned him. French philosopher Jacques Ranciere has recently argued that modernism began with the opening up of the mundane, private and ordinary to artistic treatment. Modern art no longer restricts its subject matters to classical myths, biblical tales, the equals essay, battles and youtube dealings of Princes and prelates.

French philosopher, Jacques Ranciere. Annette Bozorgan/Wikimedia Commons. If Ranciere is othello on love right, it could be said that Montaigne’s 107 Essays, each between several hundred words and youtube dessay (in one case) several hundred pages, came close to inventing modernism in the late 16th century. Montaigne frequently apologizes for writing so much about himself. He is only a second rate politician and one-time Mayor of Bourdeaux, after all. Of Death Thesis? With an youtube dessay almost Socratic irony, he tells us most about his own habits of writing in the essays titled “Of Presumption”, “Of Giving the Lie”, “Of Vanity”, and “Of Repentance”. But the message of this latter essay is, quite simply, that non, je ne regrette rien , as a more recent French icon sang:

Were I to live my life over essay, again, I should live it just as I have lived it; I neither complain of the past, nor do I fear the future; and if I am not much deceived, I am the same within that I am without…I have seen the grass, the blossom, and the fruit, and youtube now see the writing an argument essay, withering; happily, however, because naturally. Montaigne’s persistence in assembling his extraordinary dossier of stories, arguments, asides and observations on nearly everything under the sun (from how to parley with an dessay enemy to whether women should be so demure in matters of sex, has been celebrated by admirers in nearly every generation. Within a decade of his death, his Essays had left their mark on Bacon and Shakespeare. He was a hero to the enlighteners Montesquieu and Diderot. Voltaire celebrated Montaigne – a man educated only by his own reading, his father and his childhood tutors – as “the least methodical of all philosophers, but the rubric essays, wisest and most amiable”. Nietzsche claimed that the very existence of Montaigne’s Essays added to the joy of living in this world. More recently, Sarah Bakewell’s charming engagement with Montaigne, How to dessay, Live or a Life of Montaigne in One Question and Twenty Attempts at write essay example, an Answer (2010) made the best-sellers’ lists.

Even today’s initiatives in teaching philosophy in schools can look back to Montaigne (and his “On the youtube dessay, Education of Children”) as a patron saint or sage . So what are these Essays, which Montaigne protested were indistinguishable from their author? (“My book and I go hand in hand together”). It’s a good question. Anyone who tries to read the Essays systematically soon finds themselves overwhelmed by the sheer wealth of examples, anecdotes, digressions and curios Montaigne assembles for our delectation, often without more than the essay and afforestation, hint of a reason why. To open the book is to dessay, venture into essay on deforestation and afforestation a world in which fortune consistently defies expectations; our senses are as uncertain as our understanding is prone to error; opposites turn out very often to be conjoined (“the most universal quality is diversity”); even vice can lead to dessay, virtue. Many titles seem to essay, have no direct relation to their contents. Nearly everything our author says in one place is qualified, if not overturned, elsewhere.

Without pretending to untangle all of the knots of this “book with a wild and desultory plan”, let me tug here on a couple of Montaigne’s threads to invite and assist new readers to find their own way. Philosophy (and writing) as a way of youtube dessay life. Some scholars argued that Montaigne began writing his essays as a want-to-be Stoic, hardening himself against the horrors of the French civil and religious wars, and on deforestation his grief at the loss of his best friend Etienne de La Boetie through dysentery. Did Montaigne turn to youtube dessay, the Stoic school of ap grading essays philosophy to deal with the youtube, horrors of war? Edouard Debat-Ponsan/Wikimedia Commons. Certainly, for Montaigne, as for ancient thinkers led by writing an argument worksheet, his favorites, Plutarch and the Roman Stoic Seneca, philosophy was not solely about constructing theoretical systems, writing books and youtube articles. It was what one more recent admirer of Montaigne has called “a way of life”. Montaigne has little time for forms of pedantry that value learning as a means to insulate scholars from the world, rather than opening out onto it. He writes: Either our reason mocks us or it ought to have no other aim but our contentment. We are great fools. ‘He has passed over his life in idleness,’ we say: ‘I have done nothing today.’ What? have you not lived? that is not only the money equals, fundamental, but the youtube, most illustrious of all your occupations.

One feature of the Essays is, accordingly, Montaigne’s fascination with the daily doings of writing worksheet men like Socrates and Cato the Younger; two of those figures revered amongst the ancients as wise men or “sages”. Their wisdom, he suggests, was chiefly evident in the lives they led (neither wrote a thing). Youtube Dessay? In particular, it was proven by the nobility each showed in facing their deaths. Socrates consented serenely to taking hemlock, having been sentenced unjustly to death by the Athenians. Cato stabbed himself to death after having meditated upon Socrates’ example, in ap grading rubric, order not to cede to dessay, Julius Caesar’s coup d’etat . To achieve such “philosophic” constancy, Montaigne saw, requires a good deal more than book learning. Indeed, everything about our passions and, above all, our imagination, speaks against othello on love, achieving that perfect tranquillity the classical thinkers saw as the highest philosophical goal. We discharge our hopes and dessay fears, very often, on the wrong objects, Montaigne notes, in an observation that anticipates the thinking of Freud and modern psychology. Always, these emotions dwell on things we cannot presently change. Sometimes, they inhibit our ability to see and deal in a supple way with the changing demands of life.

Philosophy, in write essay, this classical view, involves a retraining of our ways of thinking, seeing and being in the world. Montaigne’s earlier essay “To philosophise is to learn how to die” is perhaps the clearest exemplar of his indebtedness to this ancient idea of philosophy. Yet there is a strong sense in youtube dessay, which all of the Essays are a form of what one 20th century author has dubbed “self-writing”: an ethical exercise to “strengthen and enlighten” Montaigne’s own judgement, as much as that of we readers: And though nobody should read me, have I wasted time in entertaining myself so many idle hours in so pleasing and of death useful thoughts? … I have no more made my book than my book has made me: it is a book consubstantial with the youtube dessay, author, of a peculiar design, a parcel of my life… As for the seeming disorder of the on deforestation and afforestation, product, and dessay Montaigne’s frequent claims that he is playing the fool, this is ap grading rubric arguably one more feature of the Essays that reflects his Socratic irony. Youtube Dessay? Montaigne wants to leave us with some work to money equals, do and scope to find our own paths through the labyrinth of his thoughts, or alternatively, to bobble about on dessay their diverting surfaces. Yet Montaigne’s Essays, for all of othello essays on love their classicism and their idiosyncrasies, are rightly numbered as one of the founding texts of youtube modern thought. Their author keeps his own prerogatives, even as he bows deferentially before the altars of ancient heroes like Socrates, Cato, Alexander the Great or the Theban general Epaminondas.

There is a good deal of the Christian, Augustinian legacy in Montaigne’s makeup. And of all the philosophers, he most frequently echoes ancient sceptics like Pyrrho or Carneades who argued that we can know almost nothing with certainty. This is especially true concerning the “ultimate questions” the Catholics and Huguenots of Montaigne’s day were bloodily contesting. Michel de Montaigne. Wikimedia Commons. Writing in equals, a time of cruel sectarian violence, Montaigne is unconvinced by the ageless claim that having a dogmatic faith is necessary or especially effective in assisting people to love their neighbors: Between ourselves, I have ever observed supercelestial opinions and subterranean manners to be of singular accord… This scepticism applies as much to the pagan ideal of a perfected philosophical sage as it does to theological speculations. Socrates’ constancy before death, Montaigne concludes, was simply too demanding for most people, almost superhuman. As for youtube dessay Cato’s proud suicide, Montaigne takes liberty to doubt whether it was as much the product of Stoic tranquility, as of a singular turn of mind that could take pleasure in example, such extreme virtue. Indeed when it comes to youtube, his essays “Of Moderation” or “Of Virtue”, Montaigne quietly breaks the ancient mold.

Instead of othello essays on love celebrating the feats of the world’s Catos or Alexanders, here he lists example after example of people moved by their sense of transcendent self-righteousness to dessay, acts of murderous or suicidal excess. Even virtue can become vicious, these essays imply, unless we know how to moderate our own presumptions. If there is one form of argument Montaigne uses most often, it is the ap grading rubric essays, sceptical argument drawing on the disagreement amongst even the wisest authorities. If human beings could know if, say, the soul was immortal, with or without the body, or dissolved when we die…then the wisest people would all have come to the same conclusions by now, the argument goes. Yet even the “most knowing” authorities disagree about such things, Montaigne delights in showing us. The existence of such “an infinite confusion” of youtube opinions and customs ceases to be the problem, for Montaigne. It points the writing essay, way to dessay, a new kind of solution, and could in fact enlighten us. Documenting such manifold differences between customs and opinions is, for him, an education in othello, humility: Manners and opinions contrary to mine do not so much displease as instruct me; nor so much make me proud as they humble me. His essay “Of Cannibals” for instance, presents all of the different aspects of American Indian culture, as known to dessay, Montaigne through travellers’ reports then filtering back into rubric essays Europe. For the youtube, most part, he finds these “savages’” society ethically equal, if not far superior, to that of war-torn France’s — a perspective that Voltaire and Rousseau would echo nearly 200 years later.

We are horrified at essay on deforestation, the prospect of eating our ancestors. Yet Montaigne imagines that from the youtube dessay, Indians’ perspective, Western practices of cremating our deceased, or burying their bodies to be devoured by the worms must seem every bit as callous. And while we are at it, Montaigne adds that consuming people after they are dead seems a good deal less cruel and inhumane than torturing folk we don’t even know are guilty of othello essays on love any crime whilst they are still alive… Voltaire celebrated Montaigne as one of the wisest and most amiable philosophers. Dessay? Nicolas de Largillierre/Wikimedia Commons. “So what is left then?”, the reader might ask, as Montaigne undermines one presumption after another, and piles up exceptions like they had become the writing an argument worksheet, only rule. A very great deal , is the answer. With metaphysics, theology, and youtube dessay the feats of godlike sages all under a “suspension of judgment”, we become witnesses as we read the Essays to a key document in the modern revaluation and valorization of everyday life. There is, for instance, Montaigne’s scandalously demotic habit of interlacing words, stories and actions from his neighbors, the local peasants (and peasant women) with examples from the greats of Christian and ap grading essays pagan history. As he writes: I have known in my time a hundred artisans, a hundred laborers, wiser and more happy than the rectors of the university, and whom I had much rather have resembled.

By the end of the youtube dessay, Essays, Montaigne has begun openly to suggest that, if tranquillity, constancy, bravery, and honor are the goals the rubric, wise hold up for us, they can all be seen in much greater abundance amongst the salt of the earth than amongst the rich and dessay famous: I propose a life ordinary and without lustre: ‘tis all one…To enter a breach, conduct an example embassy, govern a people, are actions of renown; to…laugh, sell, pay, love, hate, and youtube dessay gently and ap grading rubric essays justly converse with our own families and with ourselves…not to dessay, give our selves the lie, that is rarer, more difficult and less remarkable… And so we arrive with these last Essays at merchant of death thesis, a sentiment better known today from another philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche, the youtube dessay, author of othello on love A Gay Science (1882) . Montaigne’s closing essays repeat the avowal that: “I love a gay and civil wisdom…” But in contrast to his later Germanic admirer, the music here is less Wagner or Beethoven than it is Mozart (as it were), and Montaigne’s spirit much less agonized than gently serene. It was Voltaire, again, who said that life is a tragedy for those who feel, and a comedy for those who think. Youtube? Montaigne adopts and on love admires the dessay, comic perspective. As he writes in “Of Experience”: It is not of thesis much use to dessay, go upon stilts, for, when upon stilts, we must still walk with our legs; and when seated upon the most elevated throne in merchant of death thesis, the world, we are still perched on our own bums.
