Essays on Skepticism, Relativism, and Ethics in the Zhuangzi - Books

Theologico-political Issues in Richard Hooker’s Laws of essays on skepticism relativism and ethics Ecclesiastical Polity and Thomas Hobbes’s Leviathan. 1 It may seem very uncongenial to broach such an arcane subject as the one I propose to deal with: theologico-political issues in Hooker and Hobbes. Essays Relativism. As subjects go, one can certainly think of argumentative essay more glamorous ones. However, we have little choice but to begin at the beginning, and since in England, the relation between Church and State was drastically redefined by the Henrician Reformation of the 1530s, this is where we ought to start. The main effect of the Reformation was to transform the English monarch into the Head of his national Church, thus combining in a single man —or woman— the two distinct functions of Head of State and American Head of the Church.

Perhaps we tend to forget that this is still the case today, and on skepticism relativism that the present Queen Elizabeth has inherited the essay outline, mantle of Governor of the Church of England from her predecessor and namesake, the first Queen Elizabeth. At any rate, even the heir to the throne seems at times oblivious to the fact that, supposing he becomes the next king, he too will become the Supreme Governor of the Church. He may be oblivious to this, but the Church certainly is not. Only a few weeks ago, Prince Charles aired the highly unorthodox view that he would like his Coronation to essays on skepticism relativism and ethics take the form of a multi-faith ceremony, taking into account the various religious strands of contemporary Britain. This apparently innocent and well-meaning wish immediately brought a sharp rebuke from the Primate of argumentative essay outline powerpoint England, the Archbishop of essays on skepticism in the zhuangzi York, John Sentamu, who let it be known in no uncertain terms that he fully expected the Prince to ib english part 1 essay conform to his role as Head of the Church of England. Essays. The added piquancy of this recent spat is that Archbishop Sentamu was born in Uganda, a fact that was made much of at the time of his elevation and was hailed as a kind of triumph for multicultural Britain. His enthronement ceremony also bore all the hallmarks of a multicultural society, with Church of England hymns and music mingling with the beating of African drums, which the Archbishop himself was not above playing. Yet when it came to the crunch —the defence of the proper relation between Church and State—, the , Primate of England stood his ground and made it clear that the Act of essays on skepticism zhuangzi Supremacy is as relevant today as it was over four hundred years ago.

2 There is little doubt that Richard Hooker (1554-1600), the 16 th century divine who wrote the most systematic and compelling case for the supremacy, Of the Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity , would have approved; and there is little doubt either that Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679), the spm essay among, 17 th century philosopher and author of Leviathan , would have felt the same. Each in his own way, both were involved in the task of providing a philosophical and theological justification for the royal supremacy, which was under severe attack at the time they wrote their respective masterpieces. Essays And Ethics Zhuangzi. To state this is not to paragraph essay claim that there had been no attempts at justifying the supremacy at an earlier period: when Henry VIII broke with Rome, a number of such justifications rolled from the presses, such as Stephen Gardiner’s De Vera Obedientia (1535). But then these early justifications were about salving the consciences of Roman Catholics who felt uneasy at this change. Far more worrying was the challenge to the supremacy that emerged in the late 16 th century, and continued well into the 17 th . This time, the challenge did not come from disgruntled Catholics outside the essays on skepticism relativism, Church of essay outline England, but from within, from these staunchest of Protestants collectively known, rather loosely, as Puritans, but more precisely as Presbyterians. 1 Richard Hooker, Of the Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity . Preface. Book I. Book VIII , edited by essays on skepticism zhuangzi, Arthur (. ) 3 Both in Hooker’s Laws and in Hobbes’s Leviathan , the polemical intent and tone are unmistakable, although Hooker seems to spm essay causes of stress among students be more optimistic about his chances of winning the relativism and ethics in the, Presbyterians over to his side of the argument: Laws is explicitly addressed “To them that seek (as they term it) the reformation of Laws, and Orders Ecclesiastical, in the Church ofEngland”.1 Hobbes’s tone is far less sanguine, more bitter and more combative; but then, writing as he was after the execution of the king in American Presidency, 1649, he had good reason to feel sour:

2 Thomas Hobbes, Leviathan , edited with an introduction by C. B. Relativism In The Zhuangzi. Macpherson, Harmondsworth: Penguin, (. ) But in those places where the presbytery took that Office, though many other Doctrines of the Church of Rome were forbidden to be taught; yet this Doctrine, that the Kingdome of Christ is already come, and that it began at the Resurrection of our Saviour, was still retained. In The Zhuangzi. But cui bono ? What Profit did they expect from American Presidency it? The same which the Popes expected: to have a Soveraign Power over the People.2. 4 In spite of this difference in tone, Hooker and Hobbes look like and sound like kindred spirits. Both faced, in their own times, a similar challenge to the supremacy; both argued that the essays on skepticism in the zhuangzi, Presbyterians, if given free rein, would destroy civil peace, subvert the laws of the kingdom, and plunge the country into civil war and anarchy, which they duly did in the 1640s; both defended, in quasi-similar terms, the view that Church and State formed one body that should be endowed with just one head, for a two-headed body was a monster both in nature and in the body politic: We hold that seeing there is not any man of the Church of England , but the same man is also a member of the Commonwealth , nor any man a member of the argumentative essay powerpoint, Commonwealth which is not also of the and ethics in the, Church of England , therefore as in a figure triangular the outline, base doth differ from the relativism and ethics zhuangzi, sides therof, and yet one and the selfsame line, is both a base and also a side; a side simply, a base if it chance to be the bottom and underlie the rest: So albeit properties and actions of one kind do cause the safety, name of a Commonwealth , qualities and functions of another sort the name of a Church to essays on skepticism relativism zhuangzi be given unto a multitude, yet one and the selfsame multitude may in such sort be both and is so with us, that no person appertaining to the one can be denied to be also of the other. ( Laws , VIII, 1.2, 130) And therefore a Church, such a one as is capable to Command, to Judge, Absolve, Condemn, or do any other act, is the same thing with a Civil Common-wealth, consisting of Christian men; and is called a Civill State , for that the subjects of it are Men ; and a Church , for on product that the subjects thereof are Christians . Essays Relativism. ( Lev ., III, 39, 498) 3 See A. S. Argumentative Outline. McGrade’s introduction for further comments on on skepticism in the zhuangzi this point. 5 From these identical premises, there follows the logical conclusion that power over whats introduction for an the Church should be entrusted to the same sovereign who wields power over the commonwealth: “[…] it followeth necessarily that Kings may have supreme power not only in civil but also in Ecclesiastical affairs […]” ( Laws , VIII, 3.3, 148); “In summe, he [the Civill Soveraign] hath the Supreme Power in all causes, as well Ecclesiasticall, as Civill […]” ( Lev ., III, 42, 576). The almost identical nature of these pronouncements begs the larger question of whether Hobbes was at all influenced by Hooker’s much earlier work. Since Hobbes was a boy of twelve when Hooker died in essays and ethics zhuangzi, 1600, whatever influence there may have been can only have depended on Hobbes’s knowledge of Hooker’s Laws . The history of the , publication of Laws is an intricate subject in itself;3 suffice it to say that the publication of the book that really matters for our purpose, Book VIII —concerning the disputed issue of the power of essays on skepticism relativism and ethics ecclesiastical dominion—, was delayed until 1648, long after Hooker’s death, but just in , time for Hobbes to take notice of it as he was about to set to work on his own Leviathan . Too much should not be made of the on skepticism, coincidence of dates, but it is reasonably safe to assume that this publication could not have escaped the notice of essays such an alert mind as Hobbes’s.

However, even if it were proved beyond doubt that Hobbes had read Hooker, this would not significantly alter the case I have to make. . For one thing, the phrasing about the supremacy adopted by both Hooker and Hobbes is certainly the least original part of their respective arguments, and could be traced back to on skepticism relativism in the zhuangzi earlier exponents of the doctrine of the sports day in essay, royal supremacy —again, a coincidence in essays and ethics zhuangzi, expression is no proof of influence. For another, the philosopher most commonly associated with Hooker is not Hobbes, but John Locke, whose Treatises of Government are full of on skepticism relativism zhuangzi laudatory references to “the judicious Hooker”. In other words, we should be wary of setting too much store by the fact that at a certain level of their argument, Hooker and Hobbes use the same language and for an the same type of expressions to defend the royal supremacy. Zhuangzi. In this respect, they do no more than use the political idiom that was widely current at the time, which is hardly an index of anything. . Before we hasten to conclude that Hobbes was no more than a latter day Hooker, it is therefore highly advisable to take a much closer look at the precise arguments used by each to spm essay of stress among back up claims which on essays on skepticism zhuangzi the face of Presidency it look remarkably similar. 6 Perhaps the best place to essays on skepticism in the begin this enquiry is to read again, or to causes of stress among students listen again to on skepticism zhuangzi Hooker’s magnificently sweeping description of the world in terms of an ordered, hierarchical whole: Without order there is no living in public society, because the want therof is the mother of confusion, whereupon division of necessity followeth, and out of whats essay division inevitable destruction.

The Apostle therefore giving instruction to public societies requireth that all things be orderly done. Order can have no place in things unless it be settled amongst the persons that shall by office be conversant about them. Essays On Skepticism Relativism In The Zhuangzi. And if things or persons be ordered, this doth imply that they are distinguished by degrees. For order is a gradual disposition. The whole world consisting in parts so many so different is by and ethics in the, this only thing upheld, he that frames them hath set them in order. Yea the very deity itself both keepeth and requireth forever this to be kept as a law, that wheresoever there is coagmentation of many, the lowest be knit to the highest by that which being interjacent may cause each to cleave unto other and so all to continue one.

This order of things and persons in public societies is the work of spm essay causes among polity and on skepticism and ethics zhuangzi the proper instrument therof in every degree is power , power being that ability which we have of spm essay causes of stress ourselves or receive from relativism others for performance of any action. If the action which we are to perform be conversant about matter of mere religion, the power of performing it is then spiritual. And if that power be such as hath no other to sports day in essay overrule it, we term it dominion or power supreme; so far as the bounds therof do extend. ( Laws , VIII, 2.1, 139) 7 This text would deserve a far longer commentary than I have time for. What it does bring out is the intimate connection between three notions, those of dominion, order, and power, which are central to Hooker’s thought and are distinctly inherited from medieval scholastics.

The notion of essays on skepticism in the dominion ( dominium in Latin) is built on spm essay of stress the fundamental theological premise that God, as Creator of the world, can properly be called Dominus or Lord of the essays relativism zhuangzi, whole Creation, which can therefore be viewed as the Dominion (domain) over which he exercises his Lordship (dominion). But since the Creator is wise and good, his Creation is an ordered whole, so that God’s dominium manifests his wisdom for all to see. Sports Essay. Marie-France Renoux-Zagame makes this point with crystal-clear clarity: 4 Marie-France Renoux-Zagame, Origines theologiques du concept de propriete , Paris/Geneve : Droz, 19 (. But as Renoux-Zagame makes it clear, and relativism and ethics zhuangzi as Hooker himself suggests, order is not given once and for whats paragraph for an all; it has to be sustained and actively kept so as to prevent both the essays on skepticism in the, Creation in general, and society in essay on product, particular, from essays and ethics zhuangzi lapsing back into chaos: to take up Hooker’s own expression, “the proper instrument” to maintain order “is power, power being that ability which we have of causes of stress among ourselves or receive from others for performance of any action”. As a result of this connection between dominion and essays relativism in the power, the term dominion came to refer equally to a power of government: […] le terme domaine prend un sens particulier, puisqu’il designe plus specialement la puissance qui permet de gouverner les etres. A ce titre, il est integre, chez un grand nombre d’auteurs, a une vision hierarchique de l’univers, a l’interieur duquel il se confond avec le lien unissant de degre en degre les formes les moins parfaites aux formes les plus parfaites.5. 9 Hooker was undoubtedly one of those authors, and it is only within the context of essay on product this all-encompassing theological framework that his argument in defence of the royal supremacy can be properly understood.

10 In Hooker’s account, the notion of supremacy only makes sense if it is related to the apparently contradictory notion of bound, or limit: there is no such thing as absolute supremacy —the expression would have sounded oxymoronic to his ears—, because supremacy remains tied to conditions that duly circumscribe it and limit its scope. Essay Safety. As Hooker argues, and this bears repeating, “if that power be such as hath not any other to essays on skepticism relativism zhuangzi overrule it, we term it dominion or power supreme, so far as the bounds thereof do extend”. . So far as, but no further, could be an appropriate gloss on this passage. If kings therefore “are said to have spiritual dominion, or supreme authority in on skepticism relativism, Ecclesiastical affairs and causes, the meaning is, that within their own precincts and territories they have authority and power to command […] and causes that there is no higher, nor greater […] where they are placed to reign as kings ” ( Laws , VIII, 2.1, 139-140; italics mine). This is pure Hooker: the king’s supremacy is never conceptualized apart from the conditions and restrictions that give it its proper place. Essays Relativism Zhuangzi. The king does wield supreme power, but only “where [he] is placed to spm essay causes among students reign as king”, i.e., only in the proper place that is allotted to essays zhuangzi him in the great, hierarchical, ordered whole, that is God’s dominion. Supreme as it may be, the essays on skepticism in the zhuangzi, king’s power is nevertheless strictly circumscribed: by relativism and ethics in the, God above, by the laws of society, but also by society —or to use the medieval word, the universitas — taken as a whole: In Kingdoms therefore of this quality the highest Governor hath indeed universal dominion, but with dependence upon that whole body over the several parts whereof he hath dominion so that it standeth for an axiom in Presidency, this case, The king is major singulis universis minor [greater than each subject taken individually, but smaller than the whole taken collectively]. ( Laws , VIII, 3.2, 143) 11 Needless to say, this conception of supremacy is no less valid in the case of the king’s ecclesiastical dominion than in on skepticism in the zhuangzi, the case of his dominion over the commonwealth. In particular, this implies that however extensive the king’s power is recognized as being over the government of the Church, it is nevertheless framed and controlled by the ecclesiastical laws.

Furthermore, the power of order remains the preserve of the Church and spm essay of stress is explicitly denied to kings: Touching that which is now in hand we are on all sides fully agreed […] (2) Secondly that some kinds of actions conversant about such affairs are denied unto Kings, as namely actions of the power of order and of that power of jurisdiction which is with it inseparably joined, power to administer the word and Sacraments, power to ordain, to among judge as an Ordinary, to essays and ethics zhuangzi bind and loose, to excommunicate and such like. ( Laws , VIII, 3.3, 149-150) 6 Both together make up the plenitudo potestatis ?the plenitude of power? of the Church. 12 In Hooker’s view, the royal supremacy does not obliterate the autonomy of the Church: nowhere is this concern for the Church’s autonomy more visible than when he stresses that the classic distinction between the part 1 essay, power of jurisdiction ( potestas jurisdictionis ) and the power of essays on skepticism relativism order ( potestas ordinis )6 still holds, and whats introduction paragraph for an that the king’s encroachment on the former must be strictly limited and circumscribed. The relation between Church and commonwealth is not one of complete subordination of the former to essays on skepticism zhuangzi the latter, but could best be described in terms of a balanced, harmonious partnership under the aegis of a godly prince, whose duty it is to take care of religion ( cura religionis ) and of his subjects’ souls:

A gross error it is to think that regal power ought to serve for the good of the body and not of the soul, for men’s temporal peace and not their eternal safety; as if God had ordained Kings for among students no other end and purpose but only to essays on skepticism relativism and ethics fat up men like hogs and to a good for an see that they have their mash? ( Laws , VIII, 3.5, 154) 13 Hobbes’s vision could hardly be more different. For a start, the “Common Power” ( Lev ., II, 17, 227) that men erect over themselves to escape the terrors of the essays in the, state of nature, and from which they expect protection, is not simply their representative, as in part 1 essay, Hooker’s view. He is, quite literally, their embodiment, incorporating them all and transforming the relativism zhuangzi, multitude into one body: “This is more than Consent, or Concord; it is a reall Unitie of them all, in one and the same Person […]” ( Lev ., II, 17, 227). If such is the American Presidency, case, if the Sovereign is the essays relativism and ethics, incorporation of all and sundry “in one and the same Person”, Hobbes concludes that. […] there is little ground for the opinion of them, that say of Soveraign Kings, though they be singulis majores , of greater Power than every one of their Subjects, yet they be Universis minores , of lesse power than them all together. For if by , all together , they mean not the collective body as one person, then all together , and every one , signifie the same; and the speech is absurd.

But if by all together , they understand them as one Person (which Person the essays and ethics, Sovereign bears,) then the power of all together, is the outline, same with the essays relativism zhuangzi, Soveraigns power; and so again the speech is absurd […]. ( Lev ., II, 18, 237) 7 In Biblical imagery, Leviathan symbolizes a powerful sea monster which it is not in , man’s power to (. ) 14 Hobbes no longer thinks or writes in terms of supremacy, a notion that makes sense in on skepticism and ethics in the zhuangzi, the medieval framework of dominium ; he argues in terms of sovereignty, a notion that he has not invented, but to which he gives the safety, widest possible scope. Sovereign power is not simply indivisible, it is “unlimited” ( Lev ., II, 20, 260), it knows no bounds —at least as far as words and essays relativism and ethics in the actions are concerned— it “is as great, as possibly men can be imagined to make it” ( Lev ., II, 20, 260). It is therefore so great, so formidable, that the only way of essays relativism and ethics giving some idea of whats a good what it is like is to draw analogies, with Leviathan,7 but also with God himself: “This is the Generation of on skepticism in the zhuangzi that great LEVIATHAN, or rather (to speak more reverently) of essay on product that Mortall God , to which wee owe under the Immortall God , our peace and defence” ( Lev ., II, 17, 227). 8 “Of that law which God from essays on skepticism relativism zhuangzi before the beginning hath set for himself to do all things by” ( Laws , (. ) 15 This analogy between the commonwealth and God is far more than a particularly vivid image, made to strike the annual sports day in school, imagination (although this is also what it is); it points to the far deeper theological background of Hobbes’s notion of sovereignty. For Hobbes unmistakably belongs to that theological tradition, commonly associated with the names of whats a good introduction paragraph Duns Scotus and William of Occam, for which God is first and foremost to be thought of in terms of potentia , of omnipotence. He is pre-eminently the almighty, and his omnipotence is not tied to any law which he might have set himself prior to the Creation —as Hooker, as heir to a different theological tradition, believed.8 The description of the and ethics zhuangzi, sovereign power in terms of part 1 essay a “mortall God” is therefore meant to on skepticism and ethics in the zhuangzi underline the ib english 1 essay, very serious point that the sovereign enjoys a power over the commonwealth that is no less extensive than the power God wields over His Creation, a power which knows virtually no bounds. 16 It would have been very odd indeed if such a conception of sovereignty had had no effect on Hobbes’s view about the royal supremacy. Predictably enough, the sovereign’s power in causes ecclesiastical goes much further than anything Hooker had contemplated.

In Hobbes’s scheme, even the relativism in the zhuangzi, power of part 1 essay order is taken up by the sovereign: But if every Christian Soveraign be the Supreme pastor of his own Subjects, it seemeth that he hath also the spm essay of stress students, Authority, not only to Preach (which perhaps no man will deny;) but also to Baptize, and to Administer the Sacrament of the on skepticism relativism zhuangzi, Lords Supper; and to Consecrate both Temples, and Pastors to Gods service; which most men deny; […]. Presidency. ( Lev ., III, 42, 570) 17 The autonomy of the Church is utterly destroyed, its ministers, mere holders of ministerial offices, like lawyers or university lecturers, whose authority is held from the sovereign. With Hobbes, the in the, fine balance carefully nurtured by essay powerpoint, Hooker between Church and on skepticism relativism in the zhuangzi commonwealth is swept away. The Church is not so much submitted to, as absorbed by the commonwealth; the prince, no longer the godly prince called for and praised by Hooker, but a hard-headed statesman whose business is simply “to defend them [his subjects] from the invasion of Forraigners, and the injuries of American Presidency one another, and thereby to secure them in essays relativism, such sort, as that by safety, their owne industrie, and by the fruites of the Earth, they may nourish themselves and live contentedly; […]” ( Lev ., II, 17, 227). 18 “That they may nourish themselves and live contentedly”: this sounds suspiciously like Hooker’s portrayal of those kings who “fat up men like hogs […] and see that they have their mash” ( Laws , VIII, 3.5, 154). On Skepticism Relativism In The Zhuangzi. The end of ib english Hobbes’s commonwealth is certainly not to promote a highest good, for according to him there is simply no such thing: “For there is no such Finis ultimus , (utmoste ayme,) nor Summum Bonum , (greatest Good,) as is spoken of in the Books of the essays on skepticism relativism zhuangzi, old Morall Philosophers” ( Lev ., I, 11, 160). The end is the pragmatic, but by no means ignoble one, of providing protection, in exchange for obedience on American Presidency the subjects’ part. These are almost Hobbes’s parting words: “And thus I have brought to an end my Discourse of Civill and Ecclesiasticall Government, occasioned by the disorders of the present time, without partiality, without application, and without other designe, than to set before mens eyes the mutuall Relation between Protection and essays on skepticism relativism and ethics in the Obedience” ( Lev ., “A Review, and Conclusion”, 728). 19 The surface similarity between Hooker and for an Hobbes has therefore turned out to relativism in the zhuangzi be just that: a surface similarity, thinly veiling substantial differences. But we are still left with an issue that has not been examined but is now inescapable.

So far, we have dealt with the relation between the Church and the State, i.e., between two institutions, hardly at all with religion, as distinct from the institutions that give it its visible shape. In Hooker’s case, the issue is hardly one at all; it might simply be stated that for him, the true religion is the Christian one, and that the Church that best embodies it is none other than the Church of England. The case with Hobbes is far more intricate. I am certainly not going to try and answer such an intractable question as that of Hobbes’s religion or Hobbes’s religious beliefs, but what does emerge from a reading of Leviathan is that in order to ib english preserve civil peace and and ethics in the zhuangzi prevent the disaster of civil war, it is vital that the sovereign should retain the undiluted right to define what doctrines are to be believed: For it is evident to the meanest capacity, that mens actions are derived from the opinions they have of the argumentative outline, Good, or Evill, which from those actions redound unto themselves; and on skepticism relativism in the zhuangzi consequently, men that are once possessed of an opinion, that their obedience to the Soveraign Power, will bee more hurtfull to them, than their disobedience, will disobey the Laws, and thereby overthrow the Common-wealth, and safety introduce confusion, and Civill war; for the avoiding whereof, all Civill Government was ordained. ( Lev ., III, 42, 567) 9 “ First, from his desire of knowing Cause ”, “ From the consideration of the Beginning of things ”, “ F (. ) 10 “ The true Religion, and the lawes of Gods kingdome the same ” ( Lev ., I, 12, 178, marginal title).

20 That these opinions are of a moral and religious nature is clear both from the text itself (which deals with opinions of good and evil) and from its wider context, the relativism zhuangzi, extended discussion “Of a Christian Commonwealth” that forms Part III of day in Leviathan , and culminates in the indictment of Roman Catholicism and Presbyterianism. Essays On Skepticism Relativism And Ethics Zhuangzi. On one reading, this might be interpreted in terms of a loyal defence of Anglican supremacy, with the Church of annual sports day in essay England cast in essays on skepticism relativism and ethics zhuangzi, the role of defender of the true faith against superstition, or the “kingdome of ib english part 1 essay darknesse” ( Lev. , IV, 627), as represented by these apparently unlikely twins, Rome and Geneva. Yet on another reading it is difficult to escape the nagging feeling that Hobbes used Roman Catholicism and Presbyterianism as straw figures to cast doubt on religion itself. Hobbes’s analysis of the “seed of Religion ” ( Lev ., I, 12, 168) focuses mostly on its natural causes,9 although revelation is dutifully mentioned as the essays, source of true religion.10 As to the famous distinction between Religion and argumentative outline Superstition, it is a moot point whether it is fish or flesh: “Feare of power invisible, feigned by on skepticism relativism zhuangzi, the mind, or imagined from essay tales publiquely allowed, RELIGION; not allowed, SUPERSTITION. And when the power imagined, is truly such as we imagine, TRUE RELIGION” ( Lev ., I, 6, 124). 21 Significantly, this passage is part of the sixth chapter of Part I of Leviathan , entitled “ Of the on skepticism relativism and ethics in the, Interiour Beginnings of spm essay causes among Voluntary Motions; commonly called the PASSIONS . And the essays relativism and ethics in the, Speeches by which they are expressed ”: this is as much as to American Presidency say that religion is first and foremost a passion, which as such is not amenable to essays on skepticism relativism in the zhuangzi the power of reason, and ib english part must be subdued by the authority of the state. Which leads me to my concluding remarks, in which I shall simply contrast Hooker and Hobbes about the issues under discussion in order to bring out their differences. 22 For Hooker, religion is a set of beliefs that is so beneficial that it is the duty of the ib english 1 essay, commonwealth to promote it through the agency of a state church. 23 For Hobbes, religion is a passion that is so dangerous that it is the duty of the commonwealth to hold it in check through the agency of 1 essay a state church. 24 Both Hooker and Hobbes wrote a very long time ago.

In spite of on skepticism relativism in the this, and even if we make due allowance for the very different conditions we live under, I am not certain that their views are totally irrelevant to our contemporary concerns. 6 Both together make up the plenitudo potestatis ?the plenitude of power? of the Church. 7 In Biblical imagery, Leviathan symbolizes a powerful sea monster which it is not in man’s power to catch or tame. Writing the relativism in the, A2 Art Personal Study: examples, help and guidance. February 8, 2017 by Amiria Gale. This article has been written for CIE A Level Art students who are working on their A2 Art Personal Study. It focuses purely on how to write the text of the Study; a previous article outlines how to come up with a good topic; a future article will address the illustrations and presentation methods. The Personal Study is an area of uncertainty for many A Level Art students. It differs from projects that are usually completed within high school Art programmes, as it involves a substantial written component (maximum 3,500 words) – something which can intimidate students, especially if they are unfamiliar with how to paragraph, critically analyse an artwork, make informed judgements and write personal evaluations. With few examples of quality Personal Studies available, it can be difficult to know what is expected and how to begin. Relativism Zhuangzi. This article aims to ease this uncertainty and to make the argumentative essay, Personal Study a more easily understood Component.

This is the cover page of an A* Personal Study by essays relativism and ethics in the zhuangzi Nikau Hindin, exploring the topic: ‘Identity, Consumerism, Popular Culture: How Composition Conveys a Message’. The project analyses artwork by New Zealand artist Kelsy Taratoa. The Personal Study should be comprised of informed personal views – that is, views that are supported and shaped by an in-depth understanding of the issues discussed. Essay. Before starting the project, students should conduct thorough background research, selecting and recording information from second-hand sources (such as books, websites and other publications) and first-hand sources (interviews with artists, studio visits / gallery visits etc). Interviews with artists should be planned thoroughly, after preliminary second-hand research has been completed (as findings from research will suggest important issues to discuss with the artist). Students are often uncertain about how to phrase questions, so sample questions have been included below (the exact questions asked will depend on the topic and essays focus of the study): Please talk me through the process you follow when designing your paintings. Do you work instinctively, directly onto sports essay the canvas, or are your works pre-planned, using sketches and photographs?

What influences your choice of colour? I am interested particularly in the colours used in [insert name of painting/s]. Could you explain your thought process behind the use of colour in this work, particularly the essays on skepticism and ethics in the zhuangzi, [give example]? I notice that your work has been described as [insert relevant comment from second-hand sources]. . Do you agree with this statement?

How do you respond to this? I notice that [insert an aesthetic feature of on skepticism in the zhuangzi, their artwork i.e. ‘angular line’ or ‘organic form’] is a dominant feature of your work. Is this strongly connected to the ideas that you are exploring? Have you used these elements deliberately? Can you show me work in progress or semi-complete artwork? I would love to understand the process you go through and essay on product safety how you apply media at on skepticism and ethics different stages.

Are there any tips you would give to someone who was attempting to emulate your painting style? Which artists have influenced your work? In what way has your work been shaped by others people, events or situations? 2. Evaluate and interpret research findings. Conducting research is critical for part 1 essay, creating an excellent Personal Study, however, it should be noted that submitting research on relativism and ethics in the zhuangzi, its own will not gain a student any marks. Photocopying, cutting and pasting or transcribing information from other sources is not acceptable. Examiners do not want to read long lists of spm essay of stress among students, facts or chronological sequences of events. They do not want long-winded technical processes or the inclusion of broad periods of art history; nor entire interviews with artists (interviews can be submitted as part of an appendix if necessary). Students should not include an extensive artist biography (only brief and relevant details are needed) nor include vast passages of text that have been regurgitated from essays on skepticism in the other sources.

Instead, students must select the information which is relevant and analyse this in detail, evaluating and interpreting findings in relation to the focus of their study . Research should be used to help form intelligent, knowledgeable, personal responses : to essay, explain, justify or support the viewpoints, judgements and conclusions that are presented. Evidence of research might be demonstrated, for example, through the use of carefully chosen quotes (to support or contrast the student’s own ideas) or through the inclusion of correct terminology and on skepticism zhuangzi background knowledge to communicate an in-depth understanding of relevant issues. Ib English. Evidence might also be indicated photographically, with images depicting first-hand meetings between the essays relativism and ethics in the zhuangzi, student and artist/s. This Personal Study by part 1 essay CIE A2 Level Art and essays in the Design student Alice Ham, from ACG Parnell College, shows a cleverly selected quote alongside images by New Zealand charcoal artist Liam Gerrard. Argumentative Essay Outline. Alice was awarded full marks (100%) for this component (99% overall for A Level). A carefully composed Personal Study page for 9704 CIE Art and Design. 3. Essays On Skepticism And Ethics. Structure the Personal Study in a logical and clear manner. Before writing the Personal Study, students should plan the content, order and structure of their study thoroughly (often in conjunction with planning the layout of their project – this will discussed in more detail in a subsequent post).

This should include headings and subheadings of material discussed and rough diagrams indicating how this will be supported by images. The proposed structure should then be checked and approved by a teacher, with recommendations and clear guidance given. While the part 1 essay, structure of each Personal Study will differ, depending on the topic chosen, every study should follow the essays relativism and ethics zhuangzi, basic format outlined below: Introduction . This is where students outline the purpose, focus or mission of their study. This may include question/s they are going to answer; themes they are going to explore; issues they hope to address etc. Argumentative Outline Powerpoint. It should set the scene for relativism zhuangzi, the project and may include reasons for annual sports day in school, selecting a topic and on skepticism and ethics an indication of how / why the spm essay causes students, topic is essays on skepticism relativism, of personal relevance or interest to the student.

It is important that the American, intentions of the project are clearly set out in this section, so that the remainder of the essays on skepticism relativism and ethics, project can be structured accordingly. Body . This is the main part of the Personal Study and on product will need careful thought. It is usually organised into separate sections (which may be formal chapters, or simply different areas of a visual study), usually with individual headings and sometimes sub-headings. (I recommend wording headings so that they sum up the material contained – i.e. ‘ Analysis of Composition: [artwork title] ’ rather than ‘ Chapter 3 ’. This means that the relativism in the, examiner is able to see immediately that the student has covered a range of appropriate areas). The sections should be ordered logically and address the focus of the project; they should NOT ramble haphazardly from one issue to the next. High school Art students have a tendency to write without any preconceived order or structure, discussing issues spontaneously as they think of them. Part 1 Essay. While this can be a suitable approach for essays on skepticism relativism in the zhuangzi, more creative writing tasks – and introduction paragraph can pulled off by certain students – this strategy runs the risk of on skepticism and ethics in the, creating a muddled and incoherent Personal Study. Conclusion . This is where students summarise key points from the annual school essay, project, arrive at final conclusions and make considered personal judgements about what has been learnt. This is one of the essays on skepticism and ethics, concluding paragraphs in a Personal Study by Nikau Hindin (who achieved 98% for CIE A Level Art while studying at ACG Parnell College), entitled ‘ Identity, Consumerism Popular Culture: How composition conveys a message ‘. Causes Of Stress Students. The project was focused upon relativism and ethics in the zhuangzi, the analysis of artwork by New Zealand artist Kelcy Taratoa, with comparisons made with the work of American artist Bill Barminski:

Taratoa’s use of composition helps convey his message concerning identity construction. The arrangement of elements is symbolic of an unconscious hierarchy within his paintings that forces the viewer to question and analyse them. The contents of the paintings can be identified, as they reflect New Zealand society. Taratoa’s use of colour is vibrant and modern, echoing the technological era we live in. Barminski has a more dynamic and humorous approach to conveying his message.

He mocks consumerism with his witty and blunt slogans and replications of consumer products. While these two artists are very different, they both communicate their own attitudes about society. Making a political statement through your paintings forces an audience to engage. Whats Introduction. Ultimately we want our art to be remembered and admired and I think if the message of a painting is clear then the viewer is more likely to go away and think about it. Paintings are a powerful tool to communicate a meaning that is deeper than the 2mm of paint on a canvas.

Paintings are an artist’s voice. Bibliography / References / Acknowledgements . Essays On Skepticism Relativism And Ethics Zhuangzi. This should list any resources that students have used in their project, including books, websites, articles and videos. It might also include sources of safety, first-hand information, such as museums, galleries or websites, as well as acknowledgements, thanking the artist for their time. While examiners are sympathetic towards a student whose first language is not English, a similar sympathy does not extend towards those who submit sloppy, poorly edited material. Just as it is expected that a Coursework project should contain beautiful well-composed artwork, a Personal Study is expected to contain well-structured, well-edited material. Essays On Skepticism Relativism. Even if a student has chosen to produce a largely visual project, submitting a sequence of annotated images, the annual sports day in essay, text should communicate with intention and the writing quality should match that achieved by an A Level English student. Relativism And Ethics In The Zhuangzi. Poor grammar, spelling errors and ‘txt’ speak are inexcusable. As with any important written project, drafts should be rewritten and refined several times: chapters re-arranged; paragraphs and annotation reorganised; repetitive material, waffle and unnecessary regurgitation eliminated.

Teachers, parents and friends can all be recruited to read through drafts, highlighting spelling errors and school essay identifying areas where the writing is muddled. While the essays on skepticism and ethics in the, work must of course remain entirely that of the student, feedback from a fresh set of whats introduction for an essay, eyes is in the, invaluable. A Personal Study should include an a good paragraph for an essay, appropriate range of Art related terms and vocabulary. Zhuangzi. While the exact words used will be dependent upon the nature and focus of the study, there are a number of general Art-specific terms which students should be familiar with (these will be listed, with their definitions, in an upcoming article). Use of appropriate vocabulary helps to fulfil the ‘Knowledge and critical understanding’ assessment criteria. As the title indicates, a Personal Study must communicate distinctly personal opinions, insights, judgements and responses, demonstrating a clear engagement with the artwork studied. This excerpt from an Presidency, 100% OCR A Level Art Personal Study by Yantra Scott entitled ‘ An investigation into gender roles in contemporary art ‘ illustrates this:

I first encountered Sarah Lucas whist briskly strolling through the crowded rooms of the Tate. Amongst oils and essays on skepticism finely crafted sculpture my eyes were transfixed in a two-way glare with a slightly butch, totally intense woman, with eggs for ib english 1 essay, t*ts. Essays On Skepticism Relativism. Ever since then I’ve been hooked. It is on product, evident that Yantra not only visited and essays relativism and ethics zhuangzi viewed artwork in , the flesh, but had a strong personal reaction to it. It could never be assumed that this segment had been reworded from a textbook: it is absolutely the words of a passionate high school Art student. Essays. Although Yantra uses coarse language within her study (something which should be emulated with caution) this project is an exceptional example of an intelligent and personal response to a topic. (More of argumentative essay powerpoint, Yantra’s work, as well as the entire text of her study, can be read in full on the great Julia Stubbs’ website). Similarly, this quote from an 88% OCR A2 Art Personal Study (one of the examples given in the OCR A2 Art Exemplar Work – Personal Study document) shows a personal response integrated within the analysis of Damien Hurst’s work, illustrated below. The glass is on skepticism and ethics zhuangzi, thick, so thick that it is intimidating. It is as if it is holding something terrible back. American Presidency. It makes you question the formaldehyde and query, what if the tank did break?

The formaldehyde is not clear as I expected but is essays on skepticism relativism and ethics in the, quite strongly coloured by Presidency a blue and green pigment. Essays On Skepticism In The Zhuangzi. This colour is very clinical and has the essay, connotations of a hospital… The musings about the tank breaking and the formaldehyde differing from expectations are clearly the individual thoughts of a high school art student. Some Comfort Gained from the Acceptance of the Inherent Lies in Everything 2006, Damien Hurst. Within the Personal Study, students must demonstrate an understanding of cultural context – an essays on skepticism and ethics in the, understanding that an artist does not create work in isolation, but rather creates work that is shaped and American Presidency influenced by the circumstance/s they finds themselves in. This might mean that discussion of the on skepticism relativism in the zhuangzi, influence of natural, social, political or cultural environments is ib english part, appropriate, or that – as is more common – the essays relativism in the, influence of spm essay, other artists is discussed, with comparisons made between artwork that has been created in similar or differing contexts. ‘One night in Mong Kok’ by Akif Hakan Celebi. The excerpt below is from a CIE A Level Art and Design Personal Study by Tirion Jenkins, of YMCA of Hong Kong Christian College. Titled ‘Alternative Fashion Photography’, her Personal Study was awarded Best in Hong Kong (2012) and includes analysis of ‘One night in on skepticism relativism and ethics in the, Mong Kok’ by photographer Akif Hakan Celebi.

Tirion demonstrates a clear understanding of the interrelationship between a photographer’s work and the setting in which it was created. The setting itself creates an intoxicating atmosphere with the American, rows of fluorescent light bulbs and layers of luminous signs that form an relativism and ethics zhuangzi, endless maze of gaudy colours. However, the setting does not overwhelm the two models who draw my eyes despite the signs above them. Annual Sports Day In School Essay. They create the focal point of the essays relativism, image through the whats paragraph essay, use of the rule of thirds as they are placed off-centre and through their quirky appearance which magnetises the eye towards them. Essays In The. They seem to belong to a different world to the passersby behind them with their flare of red hair and audacious choice of feathered flittered clothes. Akif has further crafted the image through the use of makeup as their chalk white faces further segregates and a good paragraph for an essay emphasises their surreal doll-like appearances. …Akif’s pictures are reminiscent of Japanese cinema which he says he is so influenced by. “I like…its writhed and crazy stories; I feel very close to that way of looking at the world.” This photograph is particularly mystical due to zhuangzi, the vibrant and decorative bokeh of Hong Kong’s street lights in the background. The core of the A2 Art Personal Study is the in-depth analysis of selected artist works. Annual Sports Day In School Essay. Some of these artworks must be viewed in person, however it is common (and completely acceptable) for students to analyse work from a combination of primary and secondary sources. In the best studies, artworks are chosen specifically to relativism zhuangzi, facilitate the discussion of issues which are relevant to annual day in, the study. The advice in this section is particularly important and on skepticism relativism and ethics should be read closely by students who are hoping to achieve a high grade for their Personal Study.

When analysing artwork, it is helpful to analyse the work in terms of day in school essay, composition, format, structure and visual elements (such as shape, line, texture, colour, space, tone) . Students might de-construct an artwork and view it in terms of a single visual element and/or discuss how the visual elements interact, relate, contrast, balance and connect with one another. Descriptions of important terms have been included below to aid this process: Composition is the placement or organisation of visual elements within an artwork – the way these have been composed, combined or ‘put together’. Essays Zhuangzi. Composition may be instinctual or the of stress among students, result of elaborate planning (or a combination of both). A ‘compositional device’ is an aspect of a composition which has a certain effect (such as the essays and ethics in the, use of frames within frames, which might help create a sense of distance or space within an spm essay causes students, artwork). Format is the in the zhuangzi, overall shape, size and orientation (portrait or landscape) of an artwork, i.e. whether a work is painted on a long, horizontal oblong canvas, or upon on product safety, a vertically orientated A4 portrait board. Format can be influenced by practical considerations (i.e. the nature and shape of the object or scene depicted) as well as being an active decision by the artist to help communicate a particular meaning or idea. The structure of an artwork is the on skepticism in the, organisation of basic forms within a composition (this will be illustrated in more detail in the subsequent post focusing on imagery). Lines are a visual element that can direct a viewer’s gaze and create a visual path.

These can direct attention to a focal point and create depth through perspective or horizon lines. Different lines can create different effects: hard angular lines provoke a different response than soft, organic lines, for example. Repetition of lines can create a sense of movement or rhythm. Shape is a visual element that is spm essay of stress among, created by on skepticism relativism and ethics zhuangzi the junction of lines or changes in tone: the perceived boundaries of form. Larger shapes can become dominant focal points within an artwork; similar shapes can be repeated to create balance and sports create unity / visual harmony. Shapes can be symbolic, i.e. they can represent more complex forms and carry meaning.

As with lines, the types of shapes used can communicate certain feelings – rigorous ordered shapes tend to create a different mood than irregular, free-flowing shapes. Shapes might also be used to create borders / frames and boundaries that connect, overlap or intersect, perhaps helping to draw viewers from the foreground / middle-ground to background. On Skepticism And Ethics In The. Space – the absence of whats introduction, form – is an often overlooked visual element. Described as being either positive (the space contained within the boundary of an on skepticism relativism and ethics, object) or negative (the background space in and around an whats a good introduction for an, object), space can determine how busy and on skepticism relativism and ethics in the cluttered a painting is. A busy composition can overwhelm a viewer; a simple and sparse composition may appear boring. Careful integration of space is fundamental to any artwork. Form is causes of stress, a visual element that is essays on skepticism and ethics, usually discussed more easily in relation to three dimensional objects (as three-dimensional forms are usually described within two dimensional works in terms of shape, tone and line). Among. Colour (or hue) is a visual element that is often discussed in combination with tone(how light or dark a colour appears). Colour can affect the mood of an artwork due to colour associations – i.e. blue might indicate sadness. Tone can help to essays on skepticism in the, communicate a sense of sports day in essay, distance (items that are further away generally appear lighter – due to ‘atmospheric perspective’). Both tone and colour can be used to and ethics zhuangzi, create contrast within an artwork, attracting the viewer’s attention and Presidency helping to create focal areas.

Alternatively, both tone and colour can be used to create harmonious, peaceful non-contrasting areas. Use of light and shadow or warm and cool might also be an important area to discuss. Texture can be real (the result of on skepticism relativism, brush strokes, irregularities in materials, and the application of a range of materials) or implied…i.e. a surface that is made to looktextured. As with the other visual elements, texture should be integrated so that it balances and becomes an aesthetically pleasing addition to an artwork. Surface qualities – along with other detailed areas and spm essay causes among students intricate patterns – are only able to on skepticism relativism and ethics zhuangzi, be appreciated fully when viewed in whats a good introduction paragraph for an, person. It should be noted here that students should not submit reams of text explaining how certain visual elements affect artworks in general, but rather use this knowledge to write informed analysis about the artworks in question. Here is another example by Nikau Hindin, discussing the use of line in essays relativism in the, paintings by Kelcy Taratoa.

This text was accompanied by diagrams illustrating the linear elements in the artwork. …Taratoa uses strong angular forms that create diagonal perspective lines. These lines are called ‘leading lines’ and direct us to the focal point of this painting, which is a portrait of Taratoa. They also lead our eyes past him and make us look at the background. This helps to convey Taratoa’s message that one’s identity is linked to social circumstance, upbringing (background) and popular culture. Street markings form white lines and also draw our attention to American, the focal point. Street markings represent paths and therefore they may be paths to finding and constructing ones identity. They create a sense of movement and highlight the direction one’s eyes should travel within the painting. Essays In The Zhuangzi. The street markings in ‘Episode 007’ are curvaceous which creates movement. The curvy lines mirror the annual, organic forms of the zhuangzi, superhero’s muscular body, creating a visual link.

In ‘Episode 0010’ the repetition of line of the zebra crossing creates a sense of rhythm and leads us to the portrait of Taratoa in the left corner. Horizontal lines are repeated in whats introduction paragraph for an essay, the background of the essays and ethics in the zhuangzi, painting to unite separate parts of the painting. As well as the aesthetic qualities discussed above, most students also include sections where they analyse artwork in terms of materials, processes, stylistic influences, techniques (use of media) . For some, this is the primary focus of the Personal Study. This might include analysis of the way an artist has applied paint to ib english part, a canvas (mark-making, brush strokes), the sequence of building up layers of essays relativism and ethics in the, paint over a prepared ground, or the sequence of students, events involved in creating a graphic design: from conceptual sketches, development of ideas, construction in Photoshop, through to proofing, paper selection and final printing. It might involve discussion about the way a composition is planned and designed and essays relativism in the then the various processes that are undertaken in its completion. It might include cultural contexts and stylistic influences from other artists. In any sections of the Personal Study which are dedicated to process and technique, it is important to note (as mentioned above) that the examiners do not want the regurgitation of long, technical processes, but rather would like to see personal observations about how processes effect and influence the , artwork that has been created. In all analysis of artwork, whether this involves discussion of essays on skepticism relativism and ethics in the, composition, aesthetic qualities, cultural contexts, use of media, or approach to essay, a theme, it is important that students move beyond simple observations and add perceptive, personal insight. For example, if a student notices that colour has been used to create strong contrast in certain areas of an artwork, they might follow this with a detailed and thoughtful assumption about why this is the case: for example, perhaps the contrast was created deliberately to draw attention to a focal point in essays on skepticism relativism zhuangzi, the artwork, helping the artist to part, help convey thematic ideas.

These personal insights could be backed up by earlier research, confirmed or suggested by the artist, or might be educated assumptions made by the student, based upon their own responses and personal interaction with the artwork. Some final recommendations are included below: ‘Analysis of artwork’ does not mean ‘description of artwork’ . On Skepticism Relativism In The. Analysis means taking an artwork apart (thinking about it in terms of individual elements, such as line, or colour or technique), analysing these individually and/or in terms of annual day in, how they relate to one another, and making personal observations and judgements, connecting this to the theme or focus of the assignment. Saying “I like this” or “I don’t like this” without any further explanation or justification is not analysis . Writing should be carefully integrated with the images , so that it is essays on skepticism relativism and ethics zhuangzi, clear which text relates to which images (this will be discussed more in the subsequent post). Alice Ham, a Year 13 student at ACG Parnell College (awarded 100% for her Personal Study) has produced some excellent analysis of artwork by sports day in school Liam Gerrard: In most works (the exception usually applies to those done in commission) the essays on skepticism in the zhuangzi, focus of the , piece is centred, surrounded by empty space and relativism never grounded through shadow or the like. Whats Paragraph Essay. This is another way in which Gerrard plays with commonly held opinions. Relativism In The. Typically, a most aesthetically pleasing composition will follow the rule of thirds – a well known ‘rule’ that correlates to ib english part, the focus of artworks being offset within the composition, and the entire image being visually divided into 3 sections. Liam has little care for this standardised rule, yet his compositions are visually pleasing all the same. I believe this could be because of the negative space, there is no overcrowding and it allows the and ethics zhuangzi, viewer to focus on American Presidency, the subject.

I also think this space is played upon in the display of the artwork. Galleries in general will have white or very light coloured walls so as not to and ethics in the zhuangzi, distract from what is on display. American. By placing these white canvases on the white walls, hung without obvious framing, the artwork is allowed to ‘flow’ into the viewer’s world, there is no line of separation. This forces the viewer to study Gerrard’s pieces, and perhaps consider the personal message they address for the viewer in everyday life. Analysis of artwork within an A Level Art Personal Study by Alice Ham. Some of the text above has been reproduced here to aid ease of reading: The expression on the pig’s face is perhaps what would draw the viewer into this picture the most.

It directly contradicts the gruesome depiction of decapitation and appears almost to be laughing. This work like most of Gerrard’s others is a single object centred on a stark white background. On Skepticism In The. The amount of American, empty space in this picture is very eye catching and directs the on skepticism, viewer’s vision inwards, there is no chance of distraction by details in whats paragraph for an essay, a menial part of the work. Once again Gerrard uses charcoal in his personal style, leaving the artwork in black and white. This lack of essays on skepticism relativism zhuangzi, colour is cold, it presents the reality of the grisly scene without the embellishment of colours. This does not allow the audience to be caught up in what is ‘pretty’ but forces them to take in every details in it’s highly realistic, and perhaps disturbing, state. The shock factor of this piece is emphasised ten- fold by the sheer size. It cannot be realised until you view this piece in reality, but being dwarfed looking up into a pig’s head captured mid laugh brings upon you a bizarre sense of fascination. 9. Explain the relationship to Coursework (if appropriate) As explained in causes among students, the previous post about topic selection, it is no longer necessary that the Personal Study relate to essays on skepticism relativism zhuangzi, a student’s Coursework project.

If there is a strong relationship, however, students may wish to include a section in their Personal Study where relevant comparisons are made with their Coursework project. The maximum word count for CIE Art Design Personal Studies is 3,500 words. This is a maximum and fewer words is more than appropriate (especially in primarily visual studies). If a student is slightly over the word count, this is unlikely to essay safety, be an and ethics in the zhuangzi, issue (it is rare that examiners would know your exact word count, as no-one is likely to count every word in Presidency, a project from start to essays relativism, finish); however, if a student is significantly over the word limit, this is obvious and a problem, running the risk that the examiners will run out of time (or enthusiasm) to whats essay, read your project in its entirety. Almost all cases of word count breaches come from students who have attempted to bulk up their study with unnecessary information from on skepticism and ethics second-hand sources. Spm Essay Causes Of Stress Among. If you are encroaching the word limit, you should immediately ensure that you have not included supplementary research material or unnecessary information summarised from on skepticism and ethics in the zhuangzi textbooks. If you are still battling with the ib english, word count and inclusion of material from second-hand sources is not an essays relativism and ethics, issue, you should re-edit your project, eliminating waffle, and ensuring you communicate succinctly. I encourage teachers to locate and on product print the excerpts from Personal Studies that are included in the 9704 Standards booklet on essays on skepticism, the CIE Teachers’ password protected site, which can be downloaded as a PDF document from the A Level Art Design page. Here are ten tips based on the most common problems I see and a good introduction paragraph for an essay, questions I am asked: 1. Assume no one will read your resume word-for-word. Picture your interviewer pulling your resume off the printer and reading only what he can in the time it takes to walk back to his office. On Skepticism In The! Use bullet points. Essays On Skepticism Relativism And Ethics! Use headings. Give some thought to 1 essay, the format that will convey the necessary information in the most logical way. 2. It’s just one page. 3. Tailor your resume to the specific job. Keep in the forefront of your mind that you are applying for a legal job.

Do not view “updating” your resume as merely adding to essay, the same document you first created 20 years ago. Delete information that is no longer relevant #8212; remember, every last word should serve the purpose of essays on skepticism relativism zhuangzi, getting you this job. ! And remember from Tip #2, every word counts. Don’t use neutral words where a more positive word could convey more meaning. For example, which is more powerful, stating that you “worked on” a project or that you “successfully implemented” a project? 6. Sports Essay! Be sure all information is up-to-date. If you are no longer on a committee, delete it from your resume or indicate the proper dates. On Skepticism! Maybe you and one of the interviewers will find you have a hobby in common. If nothing else, this “fluff” gives interviewers some material for a few softball questions to a good for an, break the ice or end the interview on a lighter note. Aside from true interests/hobbies, include language abilities, bar admissions, and memberships/affiliations so long as you are an active and not just passive participant in these organizations. Does the balance of black and white on the page make your eyes happy?

Is there much too much dense text? Or way too much white space? If you’ve ever strung lights on a Christmas tree, it’s the same principle. Squint and then follow your instincts. 10. Essays And Ethics Zhuangzi! Proofread your resume carefully.

Then proofread it again. Then ask a friend to essay powerpoint, proofread it. And another friend. And your legal recruiter. Then proofread it again. Nothing screams “Don’t hire me!” like a glaring typo or spelling mistake.
